Sunflowers Parkway

On the way to school you would see this scene every Spring.......simply, a happy view to be remembered.

"Sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is an annual plant native to the Americas. From the Americas, sunflower seeds were brought to Europe in the 16th century, where, along with sunflower oil, they became a widespread cooking ingredient. Leaves of the sunflower can be used as cattle feed, while the stems contain a fibre which may be used in paper production." (per wikipedia)

Oil paints tubes: a pigment suspended in oil. The suspension can be linseed oil, poppy oil, sunflower oil or walnut oil. It would have been "too much" if the sunflowers in this canvas had been painted with pigments in sunflower oil. My oil tubes have linseed oil. ;)

Casa Olé is always with the espadrilles (alpargatas) display. Good buy for your tired feet if you decided to play tourist in tight shoes, this is your chance to get them. These canvas shoes have been in fashion for ages. Once peasant footwear, today very chic . I want a red pair. You?

The Lunchbox

The "fiambrera" by the balcony is cleaned and empty, waiting to be picked up for the next delivery. Could it be pink beans, white rice, pork, chicken fricassée on the next one? I have a friend that tells me that her father used this service when her mother was pregnant and she loved the prepared food. Isn't it like a pre Schwan's delivery service with homemade food and not frozen?
Looked up the meaning of this item and all I could get was lunch box. Elsewhere I found field lunchbox. I wonder where it originated. "Fiambrera" is the word I use but some people call it "cantina". The "cantina" could have "picadillo" and black beans in it. ;) Red beans?

Yellow house again?! This one is in Old San Juan, corner of Calle de la Cruz and the street that goes down. Sorry, can not remember the name of that street. We have Silky Terrier Mara waiting outside for her owner..... We know who you are!! This painting was accepted for the Beaumont Art League National 2008 Exhibition.

Painted this from a photograph taken in a plein air workshop. The initial sketch is similar but was interrupted by a visitor in the park that commented we were standing in what was known as the Snake Pit. He was a local photographer and familiar with the park. It was an early morning Spring with a pleasant temperature and serene....... it was serene.

San Juan Gate

This wall's wooden gate , built in the 1520s in San Juan, Puerto Rico, was closed at night to protect the city from invaders. The inscription above the door reads "Benedictis Qui Venit In Nomine Domini"; travelers would come thru these heavy doors and go to Mass at the San Juan Cathedral, a block away. In "modern" times cars could come out from the narrow streets of San Juan thru this gate , turn left and drive close to the 40ft wall with the water steps away. There was a "flamboyán" tree that provided shade and visual relief from the wall's hardness. Today, only pedestrians can relaxingly stroll alongside the wall.

Seems to me this is a "Foghorn Rooster". Painted him "just because". It was all white and strong looking. Kneeling down I took several photos of him and he seemed annoyed. Chapel in San Juan

This tiny Chapel in Old San Juan rests at the edge of a cliff. Standing at the edge you can see the sea. It was built around the 1750's to commemorate an event that is not clear to me yet. Celebrating the festivities of San Juan Bautista a horse racing down the hill went over the cliff. It is not clear if the young rider, Captain Baltasar Montañés, miraculously survived or perished. The chapel was either built there in his memory or to block the cliff. There is a small silver altar inside. Oil on canvas 12 x 16 sold

Heliconia is a genus of about 100 to 200 species. They are native to the tropical Americas and the Pacific Ocean islands west to Indonesia. One of the common names for this flower is False Bird of Paradise. I lost count on how many times people see this paint and they call it a bird of paradise. True, it is a false Strelitzia or bird of paradise. This one is from the backyard garden of a house in Puerto Rico.

Wouldn't it be nice to be retired in such scenery? I have to admit this was not all my inspiration. I took a photo of this lady's arrangement and then changed things a little here and there. Used what they call artistic license , well, maybe more like a passport. Always wondered how a water pump looked up close and as soon as I saw it I knew it had to be on canvas. 20x20 Sold

East Texas Nostalgia (Casita in Texas)

"Casita in Texas" I have not lived in East Texas enough time to have a real sense of nostalgia but this old style house and with the sun on it in the afternoon gave me that feeling. Pink azaleas in bloom tell you this was a Spring painting. So here it is. That is the reason for its title. More suitable and agreeable than something related to this taxing day.

Germantown Iris

This Iris was from the little park by the railroad tracks in Germantown. It sure makes me want to have some in my new backyard. I used to have some but they were a deeper purple than these. I think these are the bearded variety. I just ploppled mine on the flower bed and they gave me flowers the 2nd year. Must have liked the spot I picked for them.

Tyrrell Calla Lily

This one is from Tyrell Park. Photo was taken at noon. Flower was as white as it could be. You could find them in different colors such as orange, pink, burgundy, apricot,red.... Plant in partial shade. The bulbs or tubers require a loose and well draining soil. Mulch your soil to avoid excessive soil temperatures. Keep soil moist but not water sodden.

This little door is in Old San Juan. Michelle Irizarry has shared her photo on Wet Canvas and has painted a watercolor version of the same door. This one is a "keeper". It really works on my nostalgia to paint these little ones.

When I see these flowers two things come to my mind. First is the label of Carnation's Evaporated Milk and then the Flinstones. Probably most of you have a romantic feeling for this flower but it just reminds me of Fridays, 4:00 pm, Pedro Picapiedra and Pablo Mármol. Carnation was their sponsor. This casita is in Atlanta, painted from the owner's photographs. I was pleased the yellow color was present once again. I think the yellow tree could be a maple. The green to the left is certainly a magnolia. Sold.
